The Portage - Perkins + Will
Irving Park Road
The Portage is a “walking museum,” telling stories of the communities it links and generating interaction to promote the past while looking toward the future. The museum will operate within the public right-of-way between the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers on Irving Park Road (a former Native American portage route). Its features range in scale from small to extra-large and include art installations, parklets, a boathouse, and signage that comprise a “kit-of-parts.” Materials and lighting will unify the whole, highlighting Native American and other local history.
The Mirage Parklet is located at the Six Corners Intersection in the 45th Ward. This medium scale intervention serves two ambitions: it provides a gathering space and respite at a busy intersection, and invites user interaction and exploration. The Mirage parklet operates on two reflected layers: (1) an undulating landscape and bioswale base that references pre-development nature; and, (2) a canopy lattice that represents the Information Age and performs as an interactive beacon along the route.
