The militaristic sameness of suburban domestic life involves the construction and upkeep of identity through facades, roof profiles, landscaping, and yard signs. These elements project an internal image outward for neighbors to see – the yard and its signs are an intermediary between the dweller and society.
The film digitally recreates a suburban domestic image that is then projected onto an architecture of signs. The construction of the image is intentionally belabored as the tools of physical and digital editing get caught in a self-referential loop of production, maintenance, and identity posted on lawns and online.
Project completed with Sophie Pacelko in Prof. Adam Fure’s studio at the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
